Port News

IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST ONE YEAR, twice as long as originally estimated, to rebuild the cruise port at Costa Maya, which was heavily damaged by Hurricane Dean last month. Port officials said two of the three affected berths would open by September 2008; the third berth wouldn't open until early 2009. Reconstruction and clean-up was expected to start on Sept. 17. Hurricane Dean also wreaked havoc on the beachside town of Mahahual that surrounds Costa Maya, and officials said work is under way to rebuild the beach and small fishing village. The rehabilitation of Mahahual will include a new boardwalk along the beach and restoration of phone lines and electricity.
